Your CV is your foot in the door, the most crucial step at the commencement of the recruitment process. You want this document to reflect you, it needs to be clear, concise, professional and clear of spelling mistakes!

First Page:

  • Full Name
  • Address – suburb only required
  • Contact telephone numbers
  • Contact email address – if possible, make it a personal one not your work email address
  • Education and qualifications

Here’s some tips to assist you with the preparation of your CV.

Sequence

Set your employment history in reverse chronological order with your current position at the beginning of your Employment History section. Always include the month and year of all your work history and education, and include a company description for each place you’ve worked.

Format

Keep it clear, use a maximum of two fonts. Use bullet points rather than long paragraphs. Click on this link for a draft CV for you to use as a template.

Content

Keep it succinct, clear in terms of your responsibilities and achievements.

Work History

For each role, list your responsibilities and your achievements. Clearly outline to the reader how you can add value to their business. For positions that are not related to our current job search, responsibilities need not be outlined in detail. Also list the reason for leaving each role, don’t give the reader the impression that you’ve got something to hide.

Attention to Detail

Check spelling!! A CV that has a spelling mistake will bring into question your attention to detail, have someone proof read it before you submit the document. The presentation of your CV represents you, the layout formatting, spelling and professionalism of your CV reflects you!

Certificates and References

Along with your CV, it is beneficial for you to submit your qualifications.

Covering Letter

Always include a covering letter or address the selection criteria the potential employer has indicated are required to perform the role. Make it easy for the reader to shortlist you for the role you’ve applied for!
